In a statement released by the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) society liaison unit on October 31, the importance of community involvement was once more stressed for the continued existence of Nigel SPCA.
“The local animal shelter is facing definite closure, due to a lack of support from the local community in terms of volunteering to serve as members on the Nigel SPCA’s committee,” Trish McCallum said.
She added that there is also a total lack of monetary support for fuel, electricity, repairs, maintenance and general running costs.
The SPCA is an independently registered non-profit organisation responsible for its own survival. As it receives no financial support from government, funding remains a key factor.
“It provides a service which is essential to the animals of the community. Serving on a committee need not be daunting, although it has to be stressed that it does not involve work at operational level
A special general meeting to discuss the future of Nigel SPCA will take place at 17:00 on November 28 at Nigel SPCA on the Spaarwater Road between Nigel and Dunnottar. If a committee is not formed during the meeting, the animal shelter will flounder and close its gates permanently.
