SANDF continues to disrupt lives of evicted Marievale residents, despite court interdict

In fact, less than two months after the High Court in Johannesburg granted an interdict against the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to prohibit them from evicting any resident, soldiers continued their rampage under the command of Col Mkhize.

Read more about the Marievale evictions here.

Chairperson of the Marievale Residents Association (MRA) Chris Koitsioe and MRA secretary Willem Koekemoer escorted HERAUT through the dirt streets of Happiness Village (next to Marievale Military Base) during a recent visit.

In the next edition of HERAUT, we report on the current situation at Happiness Village, where soldiers allegedly demolished a number of shacks recently. The shacks have been built and occupied by former Marievale residents who were left destitute after the evictions.

According to Koitsioe however, army soldiers arrived at the informal settlement in the early hours of the morning on April 2, and started breaking down some of the newly built shacks and a brick building.

He told HERAUT that soldiers also destroyed the main water supply pipeline and that residents are forced to use the water that is now being supplied by SANDF tankers.

Make sure to read the full article in HERAUT on April 11.
