Pharmacy assistant bitten by thug

The incident occurred February 26 at a pharmacy in Hendrik Verwoerd Street, Nigel.

According to police spokesperson Sgt Nellie Dwaba, a 24 year old pharmacy assistant noticed the suspect moving around the pharmacy. When she saw him taking something off one of the shelves, she moved to block his exit at the door.

The suspect however, fought to escape and the pharmacy assistant informed her employer at the back of the pharmacy, who in return alerted the police.

When the suspect realised they were calling the police, he tried to push pass the pharmacy assistant, but she managed to grab him from the back. The suspect then allegedly turned around and bit her on her fingers.

“She immediately let go of the suspect, because she was bleeding. She ran to the nurse’s room for medical assistance,” Sgt Dwaba said.

The police arrived minutes later and apprehended the suspect. He was searched, but no stolen items were found in his possession. He was later charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The suspect appeared in Nigel Magistrate’s Court on February 27 where bail was granted.

He will appear in court again on March 15.
