Police in Gauteng seize thousands of firearms in September

This information was revealed in a media statement by Gauteng Province spokesperson Col Lungelo Dlamini.

“As police are increasing deployments to deal with festive season criminal activities, the Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng Lieutenant General Deliwe de Lange has appealed to the public to co-operate and report any suspect people and vehicles especially in the vicinity of shopping malls,” he said.

During September, a total of 372 suspects were arrested for armed robberies , 117 for possession of unlicensed firearms, 343 for housebreaking and theft, 269 for sexual offences, 166 for murder cases and more than 4000 for drug related offences. Continuous roadblocks conducted by the police, Gauteng Traffic Police and Metro Police resulted in the arrest of 2358 people who were driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
The firearms which were seized by the police, will be sent for ballistic examination as they might be linked to other unsolved serious and violent crimes.

“Availability of unlicensed firearms are posing a problem for the safety of the communities, as they are used for armed robberies and police are appealing to anyone who may have information on suspected people in possession of these firearms to come forward. Any information that may lead to the recovery of these firearms may be rewarded,” Col Dhlamini said.
