Tech Thursday: 6 WhatsApp tricks you should know about

1. Disable those blue ticks

Ever found yourself getting a message on your phone while you’re walking or driving and can’t reply. The two blue ticks indicate that the message was read and delivered and now that person is sure that you are ignoring them. Well there is a solution.

Trick: Go to Privacy via Settings and disable Read Receipts.

2. Keep your privacy on group chats

WhatsApp groups are fast becoming the go-to way of communication between different sets of groups. Sometimes you have no control over who is in the group and what information they have access to. Now you can make sure certain details don’t show up on group chats.

Trick: Go to Settings, then Privacy, and then tweak your Last Seen, Profile Photo and Status to show to everyone, some contacts or no one.

 3. Create shortcuts of your conversations

Sometimes you find yourself in too many group chats and individual chats that it just gets difficult to keep up at with all of them. Why not create a shortcut of some of the conversations? The shortcut will appear on your home screen.

Trick:  Tap and hold on the chat (group or individual) of your choice and a tab will pop up. Select the Add Conversation Shortcut option and viola.

4. Find out where your contacts are

One thing that rubs many people up the wrong way is when someone is late and they message: “On my way” or “five minutes away”. You can find out exactly where that person is by asking them to share location.

Trick: The location share appears as dropped pin if a real GPS-based location, but if not, it will appear beside the dropped pin.

5. Send a public message that appears private

When you have to send invitations or the same message to multiple people but don’t necessarily want to start a group or send individual messages, WhatsApp has a broadcast function that can make your life easier.

Trick: On the top-left-hand corner of your WhatsApp Chats window, there’s a Broadcast Lists tab, tap it and create a new list then write your message and send.

6. Be selective about your notifications

Some WhatsApp groups can be nauseating, especially if they never stop, while others are great for keeping up. There is a way to ignore the one’s you do not want to be notified of and one’s you do.

Trick: Go to the group chat, tap on the name to bring up Group Info and then Custom Notifications. You should be able to set your notification message alert and tone.
